Christine Mongelli has been a special education teacher at South River Elementary School for the past seven years. She is a life-long resident of South River and has been giving back to the community for many years. She has been an active member in the athletic department, from volunteering to coaching sports including basketball, soccer, and track.
Christine was one of the first teachers to embrace our mission to complete an application for an SRFEE Mini-grant which she received for her special-education students. She then encouraged other teachers to apply as well. She used the grant for a community based instruction trip for her students. Last year, she played an important role in promoting our dinner dance to the rest of the staff. The result was an entire table of teachers were able to be recognized and thanked for their dedication and service.
This year, she volunteered and recruited others to participate in our first-ever Harlem Wizards fundraiser to help us promote and achieve our mission for the South River School District. Christine Mongelli is excited to give back to the community she was raised in and will always be a RAM!
Cyndi Colalillo grew up in South River and graduated from South River High School in 1975. She attended Glassboro State College and graduated with honors in 1979. On September 1st of that same year, Cyndi began teaching in South River, where she also coached field hockey and cheerleading in the early 80s and 90s.
Cyndi’s other accomplishments include having chaired the committee for Special Olympics which took place every spring at Thompson Park in Jamesburg, and taking a seat on the Middlesex County Professional Development Committee for several years. She also served as an Achievement Coach for the district, worked closely with NJEA as the lead person for the NJEA Priority Schools Initiative, and was named Teacher of the Year in 2006. From 2006-2017, Cyndi served as the South River Education Association President/Co-President.
Since 2002, Cyndi was the District Coach for the Fast ForWord program (Scientific Learning Company). In November of 2016 Cyndi’s school became a National Reference Site, which entails being nationally recognized as a school to visit to see how well the program is utilized. Her biggest accomplishment as an educator was being a devoted teacher to her hundreds of students, with whom she has attended many important milestones in their lives – marriages, babies, etc. That is what she is most proud of!
Cyndi is excited to start the next Chapter in her life, spending more time with husband Pete, daughters, Genevieve and Amy, Thomas Devlin and Vincent, and her sweet grandson Dominic Vincenzo Quaglieri. Her heart will always hold a special place for South River!
Although born in New Brunswick 60 years ago. John Krenzel has lived in South River all his life. He attended his parish church’s elementary school and South River High School. From there he attended Rutgers University, majoring in Political Science and Business Administration. From there it was to Seton Hall University School of Law and a life as an attorney, practicing mostly from offices in Sayreville.
Always involved in religious and civic organizations, Mayor Krenzel is a lector in church, belongs to St. Mary’s Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club in Sayreville and, of course, Mayor since 2012. Mayor Krenzel has always believed that one of the pillars of a successful life is having a good education. The Bernadine sisters that taught at Saint Mary’s School believed in a teaching the basics. That belief was taken up by his high school teachers. Along with reading, writing and arithmetic, science, social studies, history and language were added. Without a good foundation, a person has a very hard time in life.
But this cannot be done just by the teachers, or even the Board of Education. Support for education must be given by the entire town. It is true: it takes a village to raise a child. Support for organizations like the South River Foundation for Educational Excellence is key. Mayor Krenzel supports SRFEE and hopes that the entire town will support their good work.
Congratulations to our SRFEE Award winners Jayde Jackson and Victoria Gil at the SRHS Senior Awards Ceremony tonight. Not pictured is third winner Sarah Brister. Best of luck to all!
